Australian actress Rachel Griffiths is making a film about Melbourne Cup winner Michelle Payne, saying her story was the 'classic tale of the underdog'.
The Muriel's Wedding star said she was inspired by the jockey's record win and wanted to explore the source of her confidence, faith and motivation.
'I wanted to recapture the feeling of her win and the deep response that Australians had as her story unfolded,' Griffiths told Vogue Australia.
'It just felt like that day we were watching the great Australian sports movie.'
Griffiths, who has been appointed an Autumn Racing ambassador, plans to direct the film, which will be produced by Richard Keddie.
