Dunham says she is going through a 'rough patch' with endometriosis |
Lena Dunham has been admitted to hospital for surgery after suffering an ovarian cyst rupture, her publicist has said.
The 29-year-old, who writes and stars in Girls, has endometriosis - an often painful condition caused by the presence of uterus tissue in other parts of the body.
Last month, Dunham said she was going through a "rough patch" with the illness, and said her body and her doctors had let her know "in no uncertain terms" it was time to rest up.
"So many women with this disease literally don't have the option of time off and I won't take it for granted," she told her fans on Facebook.
The complication has forced Dunham to cancel publicity events for the fifth season of Girls, which made its debut on 21 February.
Her spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, has not revealed how long the star is expected to remain in hospital for - and asked for her privacy to be respected.
Dunham has spoken openly about her struggle with endometriosis in the past.
