The pop icon's publisher says the singer will take readers on "an unconventional and poetic journey" through his life and work.
Prince's book will be released in the autumn of 2017 |
Prince, one of the most influential but elusive figures in pop music, is writing a memoir to be released next year.
Publisher Spiegel & Grau announced it will release Prince's first book, whose working title is The Beautiful Ones.
A press release says in the memoir: "Prince will take readers on an unconventional and poetic journey through his life and creative work."
It says the book will include stories about Prince's music and "the family that shaped him and the people, places, and ideas that fired his creative imagination".
The 57-year-old Minneapolis-born Prince is one of the most successful musical acts of all-time.
He became an international sensation in the 1980s as he popularised the Minneapolis Sound of danceable funk, with 1984's Purple Rain often described as one of the greatest albums of all time.
Purple Rain was accompanied by a semi-autobiographical film but Prince has been famously private when discussing himself, insisting that any reporters he meets not only put away recorders but also notebooks.
The singer, who was born as Prince Nelson, has recently embraced streaming, believing that online technology will give him greater artistic freedom.
In the 1990s, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable "love symbol" and wrote "slave" on his cheek to protest contractual conditions by his record label Warner.
He has released four albums in the last 18 months, including two on the Tidal streaming service last year.
