Marc Márquez took his first victory of the season for Honda during a dramatic Argentinian Grand Prix, as Jorge Lorenzo crashed out and Ducati threw away a double podium finish at the last corner.
Márquez recovered from a tardy start and kept Valentino Rossi at bay across the first stint before pulling clear to register a win at the Termas de Río Hondo.
Ducati held second and third on the final lap, until Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso collided at the final corner, elevating Dani Pedrosa into third.
Lorenzo led into the first corner as Iannone erred under braking and almost wiped out both Honda riders, though everyone escaped unharmed, as Dovizioso eased into second.
Pole man Márquez initially dropped to fourth, his trajectory affected by Iannone, but overhauled the slow Lorenzo and passed Rossi and Dovizioso in the space of a lap to reclaim the advantage.
Lorenzo slipped further behind the leading group and his challenging weekend came to an end after only a handful of laps when he crashed exiting the first corner.
Rossi remained glued to the back of Márquez's Honda and breezed past the Spaniard along the back straight, but out-braked himself, handing the lead back to Márquez.
The duo swapped positions next time around before both heading into the pits on the same lap for their mandatory bike change.
Uncertainty over the durability and safety of the rear tyres meant officials shortened the race by five laps and mandated a bike change within a three-lap window mid-distance.
It was during this phase that Márquez perfected his strategy and a rapid out lap enabled him to increase his lead to three seconds over Rossi.
As Márquez escaped, Rossi had to turn defensive as Maverick Viñales and Iannone closed the gap to the Yamaha rider.
Viñales challenged Rossi along the back straight but was unable to execute a move and subsequently threw away a potential first podium finish when he crashed at Turn 1 with three laps remaining.
Rossi, however, couldn't relax as both Ducati riders remained within touching distance; Iannone passed Rossi on the penultimate lap and Dovizioso followed his team-mate through, demoting Rossi to fourth.
Ducati seemed set for a double podium finish but on the last lap as Iannone attempted a move on Dovizioso into the final corner but lost control and wiped out both himself and his team-mate.
That paved the way for Rossi to move back into second place, while Pedrosa profited from the Ducati intra-team scrap to finish on the podium after a low-key performance.
Eugene Laverty claimed a surprise fourth, his best MotoGP result, ahead of Héctor Barberá and Pol Espargaró, who dropped to sixth after running across the grass on the last lap.
Stefan Bradl secured a fine seventh, ahead of Bradley Smith, Tito Rabat and Álvaro Bautista, who ensured both Aprilia riders finished in the top 10.
Aleix Espargaró crashed early on but recovered to take 11th, ahead of Pramac's Michele Pirro.
Dovizioso recovered and ran across the line with his bike to take a few points for 13th position as the final classified finished.
Both Jack Miller and Scott Redding enjoyed strong rides but went unrewarded as Miller crashed out of sixth, while Redding suffered a mechanical problem while riding in the same position later on.
