Kesha has had widespread support from other artists |
Pop star Kesha is reportedly appealing a judge's decision that she must stay in a contract with a producer she has accused of sexually assaulting her, with her lawyer comparing it to "slavery".
The singer was told by New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich last month that she is not allowed to leave her contract with Sony Music and Dr Luke.
The 29-year-old claims she was drugged and sexually and emotionally abused by the producer during 10 years of working together.
Dr Luke, real name Lukasz Gottwald, denies the accusations.
Kesha's lawyer Mark Geragos has said he wants another opinion, according to new court papers.
Dr Luke denies the accusations |
"Plaintiff seeks reversal of the Order on the following grounds," the papers state.
"First, the Court erred in basing its decision on its finding that Kesha could record without interference from Gottwald.
"Although it recognised that 'slavery was done away with a long time ago' and that '[y]ou can't force someone to work … in a situation in which they don't want to work,' the Court's ruling requiring Kesha to work for Gottwald's companies, purportedly without his involvement, does just that."
There have been protests in front of Sony's NYC offices |
Kesha was told she does not have to work with Dr Luke but claims her career has been harmed because she has not released any new music since 2012.
Sony issued a statement which said: "Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha."
Kesha, famous for her hits Tik Tok and Timber, has had support from other stars including Taylor Swift and Adele with the hashtag #FreeKesha trending on Twitter.
